School Board of Trustees and Election Information

At the Organization Meeting held on May 8, 2023, the Dixon School Board of Trustees was organized as follows:

The Dixon School Board of Trustees consists of five members, elected by the voters of Sanders County Dixon School District #9.  Each member serves a three-year term with an overlap to ensure continuity of board leadership. The board meets regularly at 5:00 p.m. on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the Resource Room of the Main School Building unless otherwise noted. Special meetings may be called by the Board chair as needed. Meeting agendas are posted in Dixon at the school, Post Office and at the Senior Center.  

Members of the public are welcome to attend Board meetings and public comment can be made in-person at meetings or mailed to: Dixon School Board of Trustees, 411 B Street, Dixon, MT 59831. Individuals who wish to request that an item be placed on the agenda should do so by emailing canderson@dixonschool.org or by calling the school 406-246-3566. Requests should include name, address, phone number, organization represented, purpose of the presentation or pertinent background information. Requests must be in writing and reach the Principal at least seven (7) calendar days before the meeting to be considered for the agenda. Please note that the decision to place an item on the agenda is at the discretion of the Board Chair.

The Dixon School board represents the people of the district as the legal body that establishes educational policies and sets goals and objectives for the district. These policies and goals are carried out by the Principal and staff under the board’s direction.  School board members donate their time, receiving no pay for their public service. They are accountable to the Dixon School community, and to the state and federal governments.

Beginning December 14, 2023 Trustee candidates may file for election.  There is (1) Trustee position for a 3-year term up for election this year.

The Declaration for Nomination and Oath of Candidacy form must be filed with the District Clerk of Dixon School District 9 by

 March 28, 2024 by 5:00 p.m.

No candidate may appear on the ballot unless the candidate meets this deadline.

The following statute states the requirements by which the Election Administrator may cancel an election.

Montana Code Annotated 20-3-313. Election by acclamation -- notice. (1) If the number of candidates filing for vacant positions or filing a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate under 20-3-305(2)(b) is equal to or less than the number of positions to be elected, the trustees may cancel the election.

(2) If the election is canceled, the trustees shall give notice that a trustee election will not be held. Notice must be given no later than 30 days before the election.

(3) If a trustee election is not held, the trustees shall declare elected by acclamation the candidate who filed for the position or who filed a declaration of intent to be a write-in candidate and shall issue a certificate of election to the candidate.

(4) An election for a trustee in a single-member district as provided in 20-3-338 or in a trustee nominating district as provided in 20-3-353 is considered a separate trustee election for the purposes of declaring election by acclamation as provided in this section.
